Edinburgh, the Capital of Scotland and seat of a new parliament is one of the classic European capital cities and consequently a major destination for groups from around the world. An all year round destination with superb international access. The Old Town is a maze of ancient thoroughfares where you can find the most unusual of gifts and souvenirs. The Royal Mile stretches from Edinburgh Castle down to the Palace of Holyroodhouse, passing the Queens Gallery and the new Parliament building with a plethora of attractions to see and experience in between like The Real Mary Kings Close. It is also a city of festivals covering nearly every month of the year, the most prestigious being the annual Edinburgh International Festival held in August - other subjects include Ceilidh Culture, Science, Spring, Fashion, Jazz and Blues, Art, Books, Film and Politics. Evening entertainment is in abundance with many theatres, cinemas, pubs, clubs (including the Stand and the first Jongleurs Comedy Club outside London) and "theme" tours. One of the best ways of understanding the city is to take part in one of the guided city bus tours that give you the overview before taking to streets yourself for more detailed examination on foot. The evening walking tours are also to be recommended, some are absolutely superlative. |
